Brachytherapy is a type of radiation therapy in which radioactive material sealed in needles, seeds, wires, or catheters is placed directly into or near a tumor. It uses radiation to destroy cancer cells and shrink tumors.
It is a local treatment and treats only a specific part of your body. It is often used to treat cancer of the head and neck, breast, cervix, prostate, and eye. Most brachytherapy is put in place through a catheter, which is a small, stretchy tube, at times it is put in place through a larger device called the applicator. The way the brachytherapy is put in place depends on your type of cancer.
Once the catheter or applicator is in place, the radiation source is placed inside it. The radiation source may be kept in place for a few minutes, for many days, or even for the rest of your life, it completely depends on your type of cancer, your health and other treatments you have had.
